Daniel Cabrera’s dream of becoming a police officer someday started on the street of Mandaue City, central Philippines. Poverty is not a hindrance to him, who finds the street as useful for his studies, and used the light from nearby food chain, McDonald.
Thanks to Joyce Torrefranca who took the picture of him while studying and uploaded it to her social media account on Facebook. The power of social media can is just beyond your imaginations. A simple photo became viral and inspirations.
According to Torrefranca’s caption, “For me as a student, it just hit me a lot, like, big time”.
Absolutely, as we all know that many kids now days, most especially in the third world country barely finished their studies due to poverty. While, some are just being stubborn not to, and used many excuses.
Cabrera did not only inspired Torrefranca, he became an inspiration to millions of people around the globe that seen his photo. He has been living with his mother and two siblings in a food stall where his mother works. His father is now their guardian angel after his passed away in 2013 due to severe diarrhoea.
The 9-year-old, is now the symbol of “poor slum boys” according to the city’s social welfare office chief, Violeta Cavada, who also having a hard time figuring out how to manage financial assistance.
Help started to pour in on Cabrera to help him finished his studies until college. Different type of aides given to him like cash, school supplies and scholarship offer until college, school uniforms and a reading lamp.
His mother, who works as a helper earned more than a dollar a day, described him as “very studious and determined boy”. He would go to school no matter what situation is. “Mama, I don’t want to stay poor. I want to reach my dreams,” Daniel told his mother.
